AI Art Fashion Brand

Neural Soldering is both a project to explore the creativity of generative AI, and the world’s least likely fashion brand.

Using AI Painting tool Dall-E 2 to explore and invent at the intersection of a number of fetishes : modular synthesizers, model railways, boomboxes, DJ decks and pinball. We get diffusion models to hybridize them with gothic imagery, sumptuous baroque decoration and folk textile design to create fantastical and desirable hardware toys.

For a time, the best of these designs, along with some other whimsical and striking products of AI play, were available on posters, T-shirts and mugs etc.

What’s interesting is that DallE 2 produces images that are, when looked at closely, thoroughly flawed, distorted and incompetent. Especially when we compare them to more recent models like DallE 3 etc. However, DallE 2 is often more “imaginative or “creative” in responding to a prompt. It has more ways to try to solve the crazy requests put to it than DallE 3, which usually seems to converge on a single competent but staid and conservative solution to the problem.

In future we will likely want to use older or smaller, “inferior” models to generate ideas that, perhaps a more sophisticated model can then reproduce and tidy up into something more polished.

The ultimate goal of Neural Soldering will be to have AI create real and desirable objects.
